Are you a skilled professional looking to work in Australia? Or perhaps you’re an employer searching for the right talent to fill a critical role? The Skills in Demand (SID) visa is designed to address these needs.
It allows skilled workers to live and work in Australia, bridging talent shortages and helping businesses thrive.
Important Update
On December 7, 2024, the Skills in Demand (SID) visa replaced the Temporary Skills Shortage (TSS) visa.
If your employer lodged a TSS nomination and you did not lodge the associated TSS visa application before December 7, 2024, the nomination is now considered a SID nomination. You can proceed with lodging an associated SID visa application.
All TSS nominations and visa applications lodged before this date will still be processed under the requirements in effect at the time of lodgment.
What is the skills in demand visa?
The SID visa allows skilled workers to live and work in Australia in roles that businesses can’t fill locally.
It’s a critical tool for industries addressing skill shortages, ensuring access to global talent while you experience the unique lifestyle Australia offers.
Requirements
To qualify for the SID visa, here’s what you’ll need:
- An approved sponsor: Your employer must be registered and approved to sponsor skilled workers.
- Nominated occupation: Your role must appear on the relevant skilled occupation list.
- Skills and experience: You must have the qualifications and experience required for your role.
- English proficiency: Meeting language requirements is essential to ensure effective workplace communication.
Costs
The application fee for the SID visa starts from AUD 3,115, regardless of the SID stream you apply for.
This amount is paid directly to the Australian government and does not include additional costs such as agent fees, skills assessment fees, or health check expenses.
So, make sure to budget for these extra charges when planning your application.
Processing time
Unlike most other visas, the SID visa has a quicker processing time.
On average, processing an SID visa takes around two-three weeks but in some rare occasions, it can take more than a month.

- Work & study flexibility: You can work and study in Australia for 2 to 4 years, depending on your visa stream.
- Family inclusivity: Eligible family members can join you.
- Pathway to residency: Certain streams allow you to apply for permanent residency down the line.
