Which skilled visa is right for you?

Skilled migration runs on a points test. The visa you go for depends on your score, whether you can get nominated, and where you'll live.

How Skilled Migration Works

Four steps. Get them right and the rest follows.

  1. You need a skilled occupation

Your job has to be on the relevant skilled occupation list. If it's not on the national list, WA runs its own - your occupation might be on that even when it's missing nationally.

  2. You need a positive skills assessment

An assessing authority for your occupation has to confirm your qualifications and experience meet Australian standard. This step trips a lot of people up - getting the paperwork right first time matters.

  3. You need to score enough points

Age, English, qualifications, work experience - all add up to a points score. You need at least 65 to enter the pool, but in practice you'll usually need more to get invited.

Perth and WA count as regional for the 491, adding 15 points. For many people, that's the difference between waiting and being invited.
  4. Lodge an Expression of Interest, then wait for an invitation

You put your score into SkillSelect and, if it's high enough, get invited to apply. Once invited, the clock starts on a full application - and that's where the real work is.

Points & Processing

Where Perth gives you an edge.

A state or regional nomination can lift your score, and the visa you choose shapes how long the process generally runs. These figures are state and regional, not national, and processing times move with demand.

+5 points
190 Skilled Nominated
Western Australia nomination adds five points to your score. In return you commit to settling in WA.
State nomination
+15 points
491 Skilled Work Regional
Perth currently counts as regional, so a 491 regional nomination adds fifteen points - the biggest single lift on offer.
Regional nomination

Points pool entry
Sixty-five points lets you into the pool, but the score that actually attracts an invitation is usually higher and varies by occupation.
Processing is general guidance, not a promise. Once invited and lodged, a Subclass 189 Skilled Independent visa generally runs around three to six months, and a Subclass 491 Skilled Work Regional visa around four to eight months, depending on your case and Home Affairs demand at the time. State and regional nomination, and a Subclass 858 National Innovation visa, run on their own separate timeframes. We confirm current figures for your occupation before you commit.
There is no standard skilled visa fee to quote up front - what you pay depends on your visa, your family and your circumstances. We set it out in writing before any work begins. See how we quote.
Find Your Pathway

Which skilled visa fits?

Work down these questions to narrow your options. Most people land on one or two pathways - the calculator and an assessment confirm which is realistic for your score.

StartIs your score strong on its own, without any nomination?
Yes, high score

Look at the Subclass 189 Skilled Independent visa. Permanent residence on your own merit, no sponsor and no condition on where you live. You need a competitive score to be invited. About the 189.

Not quite

Your score may need a lift from a state or regional nomination - keep going.

If you need pointsCan you commit to living and working in Western Australia?
Yes, settle in WA

The Subclass 190 Skilled Nominated visa may suit. WA nomination adds five points (a state figure) and grants permanent residence, in return for settling in the state. About the 190, or see WA state nomination.

Yes, regional is fine

The Subclass 491 Skilled Work Regional visa adds fifteen points (a regional figure), and Perth currently counts as regional. It is a provisional visa that leads to permanent residence. About the 491.

If you hold a 491Have you met the 491 conditions on regional living and income?
Conditions met

The Subclass 191 Permanent Residence (Skilled Regional) visa is the next step. Once you have held a 491 and met the regional residence and income requirements, you move to permanent residence with no fresh points test. About the 191.

Not yet

Stay the course on your 491 conditions - we can map the remaining time and income evidence with you.

A different leagueDo you have an internationally recognised record in your field?
Exceptional record

The Subclass 858 National Innovation visa may apply. It is invitation only, for people with an outstanding record in research, business or a profession, and it has no points test. There is no fixed minimum investment or net worth - eligibility is individually assessed. About the 858.

Not sure

Run the numbers first. Calculate your points, then book an assessment to test which pathway is realistic.

Common Questions

Skilled migration questions.

For the points-tested independent visas - the 189, 190 and 491 - no employer or sponsorship is needed. You're invited through an Expression of Interest based on your points score. Employer-sponsored skilled visas like the 482 and 186 do require an employer. We help you work out which route suits your occupation, score and timeline.
Different skilled visas use different occupation lists, and your occupation needs to appear on the right one for the visa you're targeting. WA also runs its own occupation list for state nomination, which doesn't always match the national list. We check your occupation against the current lists early - it's the first gate everything else depends on.
The minimum to enter the pool is 65 points, but the score at which invitations go out is typically higher and varies by occupation and draw. Some occupations have been inviting in the high 80s or 90s; others invite at lower scores. We track draw outcomes and give you a realistic read on where your occupation tends to sit.
For the 491 Skilled Work Regional visa, the whole of Western Australia including Perth is treated as regional. WA state nomination adds 15 points to your score - ten more than a 190 nomination. For many applicants in Perth, the 491 + WA nomination is the difference between sitting in the pool indefinitely and actually receiving an invitation.
Most points-tested skilled visas - the Subclass 189 Skilled Independent visa, the Subclass 190 Skilled Nominated visa and the Subclass 491 Skilled Work Regional visa - can be applied for whether you are onshore or offshore. You can lodge your Expression of Interest and be invited from outside Australia. Where you are at the time can affect your points and which nomination is open to you, so it is worth checking early. See our process for how we work through it with you.
Not being on a national list is not always the end of the road. Western Australia runs its own occupation list for state and regional nomination, and your occupation may appear there even when it is missing nationally. That can open the 190 or 491 even where the 189 is closed to you. We check your occupation against the current national and WA lists, and against the occupation list checker, before you commit to a pathway. You can also explore WA state nomination.
It depends on the visa and on demand at the time, so treat any range as general guidance rather than a promise. The wait in the pool for an invitation varies widely by occupation and score. Once you are invited and lodge, a 189 Skilled Independent visa generally runs around three to six months, and a 491 Skilled Work Regional visa around four to eight months, depending on your case. State and regional nomination, and a 858 National Innovation visa, sit on separate timeframes. We confirm current Home Affairs processing figures for your occupation before you decide.
For the points-tested skilled visas - the 189, 190 and 491 - you do not need a job offer. Selection runs on your points score and, where relevant, a state or regional nomination, not on having an Australian employer lined up. That is the key difference from the employer-sponsored routes, which are built around a specific employer and role. If your points fall short, an employer-sponsored pathway can be worth weighing up as a separate option, and we can talk you through whether it fits.
There is no single skilled visa price we can quote up front. What you pay depends on the visa, whether you include a partner or children, and your circumstances, and government charges sit separately from our professional fee. Rather than publish a figure that may not apply to you, we set out the full picture in writing before any work begins, so there are no surprises. See how we quote.
