- 01
You need a skilled occupation
Your job has to be on the relevant skilled occupation list. If it's not on the national list, WA runs its own - your occupation might be on that even when it's missing nationally.
- 02
You need a positive skills assessment
An assessing authority for your occupation has to confirm your qualifications and experience meet Australian standard. This step trips a lot of people up - getting the paperwork right first time matters.
- 03
You need to score enough points
Age, English, qualifications, work experience - all add up to a points score. You need at least 65 to enter the pool, but in practice you'll usually need more to get invited.
Perth and WA count as regional for the 491, adding 15 points. For many people, that's the difference between waiting and being invited. - 04
Lodge an Expression of Interest, then wait for an invitation
You put your score into SkillSelect and, if it's high enough, get invited to apply. Once invited, the clock starts on a full application - and that's where the real work is.
Where Perth gives you an edge.
A state or regional nomination can lift your score, and the visa you choose shapes how long the process generally runs. These figures are state and regional, not national, and processing times move with demand.
