Study-to-PR Guide

You Came to Study. You Want to Stay.

There's no single button marked permanent residence, but there is a well-worn road: graduate work, a skills assessment, points, and sometimes a sponsor or state nomination. We map yours from exactly where you stand today.

The Usual Route

How study turns into permanent residence.

  1. Study the right course

An eligible qualification, ideally in an occupation with a future on the skilled lists. The course and the institution both matter, and some combinations of the two count for extra points. About the student visa 500.

  2. Move onto a 485

The Temporary Graduate visa gives you the work rights to gain experience and meet the skilled requirements PR asks for. Perth graduates often get an extra advantage here - the city counts as regional for points purposes. About the 485.

  3. Get assessed and score points

A skills assessment for your occupation, English at the level your visa needs, and the points that your target visa requires. We run the numbers with you so you know exactly where you stand. Use our points calculator.

  4. Apply for PR

A skilled visa on points, a state nomination, or an employer sponsor - whichever fits you best. Sometimes it's a combination. We'll help you choose the right target and build toward it. See skilled visa options.

Common Questions

Student to PR questions answered.

No. There's no single visa that takes you straight from student to permanent resident. PR is reached by stacking steps - usually a Graduate 485, then a skills assessment, a points-tested skilled visa, and sometimes a state nomination or employer sponsorship along the way. We plan that sequence around your course and occupation from day one.
It can. There are points for an Australian study requirement, and further points for things like regional study or a professional year, where you're eligible. The exact points and rules are set by the government and reviewed over time, so we confirm what you can actually claim before you bank on it in your planning.
For most skilled visas, yes. A positive skills assessment from the assessing authority for your occupation is a core requirement, confirming your qualifications and experience line up with the occupation you're claiming. We help you choose the right occupation and assessing body, and get the assessment right the first time.
You still have options. A different list or visa pathway may suit, a state nomination might cover your occupation, or an employer sponsor could be the better road. The lists are set by the government and change, so an occupation that's off today may return. We map the routes that are open to you now.
