Do you have a job offer from an Australian employer?
Employer Nomination Scheme (186)
If you have a qualifying job offer and your employer is willing to nominate you, the 186 ENS is the direct-to-permanent pathway. The 482 is the temporary stepping stone if the employer needs you sooner.
Are you eligible for WA state nomination?
Skilled Nominated Visa (190)
State nomination adds 5 points and leads directly to permanent residence. WA has its own occupation list - your job may be there even if it's not on the national list.
Skilled Work Regional Visa (491)
Regional nomination adds 15 points. Perth counts as regional, so WA nomination pairs naturally with this visa. After 3 years in a regional area, you can apply for the 191 permanent visa.
Skilled Independent Visa (189)
No sponsorship needed - just your points, a positive skills assessment, and a high enough score to receive an invitation. Competitive, but leads directly to permanent residence.
Who are you bringing?
Partner Visa
If your partner is in Australia, the 820/801 is the onshore pathway. If they're overseas, the 309/100 applies. The 300 Prospective Marriage visa is for fiancés.
Parent Visas
For a few years at a time, the 870 sponsored parent visa is the fastest. For permanent residence, the 103 (standard) or 143 Contributory Parent options apply - with queues that vary widely.
Child Visa
For a dependent child of an Australian parent. 101 is the offshore stream, 802 the onshore. These are higher priority than the capped family visas and tend to move faster.
Carer or Remaining Relative
These are capped visas with strict eligibility tests and long queues. The carer visa requires an ongoing medical need. The remaining relative visa requires that most close relatives are already in Australia.

Employer Sponsorship

Skills in Demand → Permanent
The 482 Skills in Demand visa is the most common temporary sponsored pathway, with a route to permanent residence via the 186 ENS after two years in most cases.
Student and Graduate Visas
The 500 student visa is the standard path. After graduating from an Australian institution, the 485 graduate visa gives you time to build toward permanent residence. Perth counts as regional, which opens extra options.
What's the visit for?
Tourist and Short-Stay Visas
For holidays and family visits, the 600 Tourist Stream is the standard option. If your passport is from an eligible country, the ETA (601) or eVisitor (651) may be quicker and cheaper.
Bringing Your Parents to Visit
For a visit, the 600 Tourist Stream (family-sponsored) is the usual route, and longer stays can sometimes be arranged. If they want to stay for years at a time, the 870 sponsored parent visa is a separate, longer-term option worth discussing.
Medical Treatment Visa
The 602 covers travel to Australia for medical treatment or consultations, and to support someone who is receiving treatment. It needs evidence of the arrangements and how they'll be funded.
Refusals, Cancellations and Appeals
A refusal isn't always the end. Most decisions carry ART review rights, and even where they don't, a stronger fresh application often works. Character cancellations and s501 matters need to move fast.
Australian Citizenship and the Resident Return Visa
Most permanent residents take the conferral path. If you were born overseas to an Australian parent, descent may already apply. And if your PR travel facility has expired, the RRV is urgent before you fly.
