WA State Nomination · WASMOL

The shortcut most WA applicants
are sitting on without knowing it

Getting nominated by Western Australia can add the points that make your visa possible - and put your occupation back on the table when the national list leaves it off. If you're aiming for a 190 or a 491, this is where it starts.

+5
190 Skilled Nominated
Permanent residence from day one, with WA state nomination adding five points to your score
+15
491 Skilled Work Regional
The biggest boost in the system - and Perth counts as regional, so the full 15 points apply in the city

What State Nomination Actually Does for You

State nomination is Western Australia formally backing your application. When WA nominates you, two good things happen: you pick up extra points - five for the 190 or fifteen for the 491 - and you get access to WA's own occupation list, which is separate from the national one.

That second part matters more than people realise. If your job isn't on the national skilled occupation list, you might assume skilled migration is closed to you. It often isn't. WA runs its own list (WASMOL), and your occupation could be right there even when it's missing nationally. We always check it before telling anyone they're out of options.

Two Things Nomination Does

Adds points

5 or 15 more points on your score

For a lot of people sitting just short of a 189 or 190 invitation, these points are the difference between waiting indefinitely and getting picked up in the next round. Fifteen points on the 491 is the biggest single boost available in the entire system - and it applies in Perth.

Opens the list

WA's own occupation list - separate from the national one

WASMOL includes occupations that are missing from the national MLTSSL and Core Skills lists. Some trades, some professional roles, and some specialist occupations sit on WA's list and nowhere else. If you've been told your occupation doesn't qualify nationally, don't write yourself off without checking WA's list first.

What You'll Need

  • Your occupation must be on WA's list at the time you applyWASMOL is reviewed and updated. The version that matters is the current one when you apply - not what was on it when you last checked.
  • A positive skills assessmentThe relevant assessing authority needs to confirm your qualifications and experience meet Australian standards for your occupation.
  • 65 base points, competent English, under 45The base skilled migration requirements still apply. Nomination adds to your score on top of - not instead of - these.
  • Any WA-specific conditions for your occupationSome pathways require a WA job offer or local work experience. Requirements vary by occupation and stream and change over time. We confirm the current ones before you commit.

190 or 491: how WA nomination differs

WA can nominate you for either visa. The right one depends on your score and your timeline, not on which sounds better. Here is how the two compare on the points that matter.

WASMOL is WA's own occupation list - and it does not match the national one.

WASMOL is the WA Skilled Migration Occupation List. Some trades and professional roles sit on it even when they are missing from the national MLTSSL or Core Skills lists, which is why an occupation that looks closed nationally can still be open through WA. WA reviews and updates the list over time, so the version that counts is the current one when you apply. Have your occupation checked against WASMOL.

What WA nomination costs, and how we quote.

There are two separate steps - the WA nomination and the visa application - and the charges and processing times for each move over time and depend on your occupation and stream. We do not publish a flat fee, because the right figure depends on your circumstances. We quote in writing once we have looked at your case. See how we quote. Nomination is decided by WA on its own criteria and is never guaranteed.

Studied in WA? There's a stream built for you.

The graduate stream recognises that you've already put down roots here. If you finished at UWA, Curtin, Murdoch, ECU or Notre Dame, this can be a smoother route to a 190 or 491 than the general pathway. See how WA study turns into permanent residence.

Common Questions

Not necessarily, and this is exactly why WA nomination is worth checking. WA keeps its own occupation list (WASMOL), which doesn't always match the national one. Plenty of people who think they're ineligible turn out to have an occupation WA will nominate. Send us your job title and we'll check every list that applies to you.
Sometimes, depending on your occupation and the stream you're applying under. Some pathways require a WA job offer or local work experience; others don't. WA's requirements also change over time. We confirm what applies to your specific situation right now before you commit.
Then you may qualify for the graduate stream, which is designed specifically for people who've studied in the state and want to stay. It can be a smoother path to a 190 or 491 than the general route - worth exploring if you're a recent WA graduate.
Processing times vary with demand and the time of year, and WA is a separate step before your visa application. Rather than quote a number that might be out of date, we'll give you a realistic picture for your occupation and make sure your nomination and visa applications are timed to work together rather than hold each other back. As a general guide, the visa stage typically runs around 8 to 12 weeks from EOI to invitation for the 190 and around 4 to 8 months for the 491 once lodged, depending on your case - these are not guarantees and they move over time.
Western Australia maintains its own occupation list, the WA Skilled Migration Occupation List, which is separate from the national MLTSSL and Core Skills lists. Some trades and professional roles appear on WASMOL but not on the national lists, so an occupation that looks ineligible nationally can still be open through WA nomination. WA reviews and updates the list over time, so we always check the current version against your occupation before drawing any conclusions.
It may. If your occupation is on WASMOL and you meet the base requirements - generally 65 points, competent English and being under 45 - WA nomination can add points and open a separate pathway that the national program does not. It is not a way around the rules, and nomination is decided by WA on its own criteria, so it is never guaranteed. The starting point is checking whether your occupation is on WA's list.
The Subclass 190 Skilled Nominated visa is permanent from grant, so on paper it reaches PR sooner. The Subclass 491 Skilled Work (Regional) visa is provisional first and leads to permanent residence through the Subclass 191 visa after generally around three years of regional living, but it carries the larger +15 regional points boost against +5 for the 190. The right choice comes down to your score and your timeline. If your points are short, the 491 may be the only realistic route. We help you weigh both rather than push one.
Currently, yes. For skilled migration purposes Perth is classified as a regional area, so the full +15 regional points boost on the 491 applies in the city. That classification is set by policy and can change, so we confirm it is still current for your application before you rely on it. It is one of the reasons WA nomination is worth looking at closely if you are based in Perth.
It depends on your circumstances and the timing of each application. Running a state nomination alongside a pending Subclass 189 Skilled Independent visa can be done in some situations but needs to be handled carefully so the two do not work against each other. This is exactly the kind of sequencing question worth raising with a registered migration agent before you lodge anything, so we can map the order that gives you the strongest position.
